Resume gaps that don't sound like excuses

I had a breakdown at my last job and left. Now I'm back on the market. The honest version is 'that role wasn't sustainable for my mental health.' The scary version is what the interviewer hears: 'unstable, will quit again.'

I'm rebuilding my resume and my story, but I don't want to lie, over-share my mental health, or sound like a liability.

How have you handled employment gaps in India's job market? What version of your story actually landed you an interview?

Gaps are so common and so survivable โ€” burnout is real, not a character flaw. A framing people have landed interviews with: 'I took intentional time to reset and build skills, and I'm ready for a structured role.' Then pivot fast to proof. What were you doing during the gap that we can frame as growth?

I named the gap in one calm sentence and moved straight to a project I'd built. Interviewers followed my lead โ€” when I didn't treat it as shameful, neither did they.
